Buckwheat Whiskey

90 Proof

Limited Edition

Spirit Description

Buckwheat is technically a seed, and this whiskey is 90% buckwheat and 10% malted rye. It was aged in a new charred 53-gallon oak barrel for 4 years. The aroma is grassy and earthy with tasting notes of buckwheat that are nutty and dry with hints of caramel and vanilla.

Information & History

Despite its name, buckwheat isn’t actually a grain—it’s a seed from a flowering plant related to rhubarb. Unlike true cereal grains like wheat or corn, buckwheat is considered a pseudocereal, and its earthy, nutty flavor reflects its unique botanical lineage.

Historically, buckwheat was a staple crop in Eastern Europe and parts of Asia, prized for its resilience and rich nutrients. In the U.S., it was widely grown by early settlers—especially in Pennsylvania, where it became a favorite for pancakes, porridge, and yes, eventually whiskey.

Because of its distinct flavor and scarcity in modern whiskey production, buckwheat spirits are still relatively rare. That’s what makes our Barrel 21 Buckwheat Whiskey so special. The use of buckwheat in the mash imparts a bold, earthy complexity you won’t find in traditional bourbon or rye. It’s a whiskey for adventurous palates—and a nod to Pennsylvania’s agricultural past.
